The action starts quickly, but the initial central semi-bad-girl is gone before any interest is generated: murdered by an ice pick and literally thrown to the lions, described in unnecessary and repulsive detail. After an initial sprint, the plot is going nowhere fast. Christmas dinner with the dysfunctional Carella family is a bore. There's a bit of sardonic humor here and elsewhere along the way. Characters are thin and highly quirky. I found the lead policemen, Ollie Weeks and Steve Carella, to be shallow and uninteresting characters-- perhaps they would be more interesting to someone who had followed the series instead of jumping in at #51. The only character worth a second notice is Wilbur Struthers, a gentleman-cowboy-thief who sweetly trips into trouble by robbing the wrong person. Eventually, the heavy usage of f-bombs (over 50 in the book) and other profanity tipped my scales towards "avoid".0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A Good Read - Definitely Best For More Hard Core Fans of the 87thBy Dirk DrudglerOne of the more average 87th Precinct novels. Featuring, primarily, Steve Carella and Ollie Weeks, the story does quite a bit of hopping around from drugs to the CIA to terrorists. As always the story is tight and fun to read although perhaps a little less police procedural than fans of the series might be used to.The finale is also a little confusing with major villain characters just sort of dropping out of the seemingly hasty conclusion. For long time readers, One of the genuine highlights and, perhaps, one of the best moments of the series is Ollie's attempt at crime fiction which closes the book. All in all, a fun read but if you've never read a McBain novel, start with one of the earlier ones. This one is strictly for more tolerant long time fans.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The more I readBy alane farmerThe more I love this series. Ed McBain was a master. This story as all his others are fast paced and deeply engrossing. Each in the series stands well on its own. Don't worry about reading in order. This book heavily features the character Fat Ollie Weeks who is an awful character. His personal habits disgusting and his racism and mouth are appalling. If you are sensitive to this please take a pass on this book. It is tough at times to read. But, if you can remember it is important in literature to be as true to real life as possible and I think many have met a Fat Ollie Weeks at least once in their life.See all 77 customer reviews...
