I used it as a read-aloud to give my students an idea about life on the Homefront during WWII, and specifically about the economic changes that took place. There were references to rationing and collecting materials to be used by the war plants, and to women joining the workforce, which was nice, but there was also a lot of pop culture references that made it difficult to get through. The narrative was okay, the characters were pretty developed, and the dialogue was believable. I appreciated the honestly with which death, and injury (both psychological and physical) were discussed. Of particular interest is the book's focus on major adjustments and sacrifices that adults and children made in their daily lives as part of the war effort, even though they were far removed from the actual fighting.
