Were I a more astute mathematical reader, I imagine I'd share in those reviewers' annoyance. My own interest in reading this book, however, was to learn about the history of a particular mathematical problem and about the various approaches that were taken to solve it. In this, I was richly rewarded. Kepler's Conjecture is a very engaging and seemingly thorough piece of history of math writing. If it gets some minor details wrong, these are likely owing more to editorial lapses than to any lack of understanding on the author's part. Be that as it may, Kepler's Conjecture is not a math book per se. For rigorous proofs of Kepler's conjecture, one must turn to other books. To understand what the problem was, why it interested generations of mathematicians, the steps that were taken -- over several centuries -- to solve it, and who the major players were along the way, I can think of no better place to turn than this fascinating (and lavishly illustrated) popular treatment.See all 9 customer reviews...
