JacobsDaniyal Mueenuddin's In Other Rooms, Other Wonders is a collection of inter-related short stories, sad, funny, tragic. These stories are 'mature' - from a writing vision that encompasses much more than one person's private experience - the opposite of someone like, say, Junot Diaz. I don't identify much with the characters. Their interest really is in the title - Other - other lives - other rooms - other standards/ethics - not ours. But they feel very real. My brain kind of enjoys the jolt. Everyone is an opportunist - grab what you can - no dithering about right or wrong. What's 'right' is what benefits 'me' most directly. They are thieves, prostitutes, servants who find endless ways to swindle their masters, masters who are busy with their own swindles, and all are swindled most by class structures. Characters 'cross the lines' - and ways of viewing those lines - to me - are also 'other.' What I enjoy most is how embarrassing these stories are, the kind of thing that would make a native cringe, kind of like George Sauders's Tenth of December. Saunders's characters are pure whitebread America - sloppy language, sloppy politics, sloppy self-righteousness, sloppy zenophobia, full of American-style sloppy fallacies. Their capacity for self-critique, or even genuine self-awareness, is zero. Mueenuddin's stories, like Saunders's, are embarrassing to read, which feels exactly right.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Beautifully crafted stories about PakistanBy Anne M. HunterThis is a very well-written, entertaining, and enjoyable set of eightinterlocking stories of varying lengths. It's slim, easy to read, andyet evokes characters and settings richly and well. All of thestories are connected in some way to the wealthy Harouni family, wherethey owned land for a century that is now being sold off to supportthem. Not only the wealthy family members come to life -- we also seetheir servants, spouses, and other connections. The author seems toput us inside their relationships, especially romantic ones. Theclass differences between the wealthy dilettantes and the strivingpoor are clear, but all are prone to corruption and taking whateverthey can. The area around the lovely city of Lahore where most of thestories take place comes to life. The stories are mostly set in the80s, before life there became subject to corruption. So real arethese people to me that I can't help wondering where they've ended upnow that so much has changed. My favorite story was the longest one,"Lily", where we experience a relationship begin, result in marriage,and then experience the couple's disappointment with each other.Both men and women are deeply described. The author turns phrasesbeautifully, and made me wish that one could return to Lahore. I lookforward to reading his work in the future, and recommend this book highlyto anyone interested in Pakistan, or just in great stories of life there.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.A wonderful book!By taxingwomanI loved the way the stories were put together, with the theme and story unfolding to reveal a delicately detailed picture of life in modern Pakistan. The lives of the ruling class are poised against those of their peons and others. You get a picture of the aimlessness of the uber-wealthy, selling off the family assets to fund their lifestyle, contrasting against the dignity and scheming of their old retainers, and shining through all this, our hero. Educated abroad, everyone's astonished that he has returned to Pakistan with a purpose in life, to succeed in making a go of the family agri-business where his dissolute father before him failed. He's a flawed character, driven, a sometimes workaholic, solitary. Attempts without much success to establish loving relationships with women his age class, but they are too fickle or self-absorbed to make a go of anything and he's too preoccupied to devote himself to their re-education for very long. When he tries to find love with an American co-ed, the differences in their 2 worlds is laid bare. A very satisfying read.
