Honestly, I gave up on fantasy, especially pseudo-alt-historical fantasy more years ago than I would like to admit. I gave it a try due to the excellent and mind expanding science fiction published by the author.Wow. This book is a joy. Despite having too many characters to make this an easy book to start, the character development is so good that you just have to wrap your head around it and get going. Character development should be in parts. One, how are the characters developed in your mind. Can you see them Do you like them Do you know them The other is how the characters develop in the book. And it should be a development, that is, how they (hopefully) mature, how experience breaks or tempers them. And do they stay true to themselves Vox does this not only well, but exceptionally well on both counts. Easily one of the best books I’ve read in the last 10 years. Plot and geographically speaking, it is a remarkably solid foundation, building upon other books in the world that if wide, seem appropriate for the world being built. Those looking for cookie cutter plots need not bother, as the plot formulas that drove me out of the fantasy genre aren’t here. Neither are the surprise endings where the character/entity introduced in the second to last chapter saves the day.This is a dark book, but not one lacking in Hope. Metaphors abound within the covers but they neither overpower, nor detract from the story. A story that, like the characters themselves, stays true to itself. At the end of the book I was yelling for the sequel, and not happy at all at the prospect of waiting another year to read it. ATOB uses multiple characters to weave an epic tale of intrigue, power, and conflict of the Lords Temporal, Spiritual, and Magical. Military, political, and family life are described accurately in terms of a late Roman Empire civil war, conflated with war among other nations and other sentient species. However, there are strands of nightmare beings woven in among the mundane humans, orcs, elves, and goblins. Who are these nightmares that were ancient before the time of the dread Witchkings, and what are their real desires The action builds steadily through different regions and characters, coming to a head with a civil war and fracturing of the Empire at the time of orc invasions. The nightmares emerge from merest legend or forgotten lore, to wage their own games of power nearly incomprehensible to mere mortals (even the long-lived elves). The writing was crisp, well-paced, and appropriate for each sentient race, tribe, and class, portraying every character from the merest Third Assistant Frog-Catcher goblin to the human Lords of the Amorran Empire with realistic lives and motivations, life and death.I eagerly await the succeeding volumes. Based on the structure of the first book, it appears that the author has a definite ending in mind and several possible paths to reach the ending. Based on the writing quality, it looks as if he can tell the tale in about 5-6 tightly-written volumes. Unlike GoT, I was not tempted to simply skip several characters completely, nor would I be tempted to abandon the series as the story's free energy depletes after the third expansion and dilution of effort.More' please.31 of 35 people found the following review helpful.A Promising Start to a SeriesBy Katrina RedelsheimerI was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. I picked it up because I'd seen the author's critiques of the current state of SF/F and was curious to see if he could deliver an improvement on the mediocre works that just about define the genre today. I was also intrigued by the military emphasis- or more specifically the emphasis on an accurate portrayal of warfare. On both accounts, I came away impressed.Yes, this is like A Game of Thrones. As I understand it, that's intentional.It follows a similar format with each chapter named for the character whose perspective is shown, and the general idea is similar, with different warring kingdoms and factions and betrayals going on at the micro level and some vast cyclical magic operating at a macro level.Where A Throne of Bones improves upon AGoT is mainly at that macro level. As much as it's transparent in Martin's books that he has no idea where the overall story is going, it's quite clear that Day actually has a plan for Arts of Dark and Light. I get the feeling it's a good plan, too, and, without giving too much away, I suspect it's a little more Wheel of Time than Game of Thrones.Day also roundly defeats Martin in the military arena. I wasn't sure if this aspect of the book would interest me, since I'm more a fan of naval history, but I found AToB perfectly balanced realism and detail with excitement and pacing. I got the sense that Day could go on all, well, day about tactics and logistics and this horse and that infantry, yet he didn't, which gave the story a sense of depth without growing tedious. I don't know whether we have the author or the editor to thank for that, but well done, Castalia House, either way.(By the way, the human side of warfare is incredibly well illustrated, particularly in the chapter featuring "Eyepopper." If I didn't actually cry, it was only because I was too busy double-checking the by-line to make sure it didn't say "Tolstoy.")I should also offer some praise to the characters whose perspectives we see in the book. Unlike in Martin's books, there is no one I want to choke to death, no name that makes me dread the coming chapter (*cough* Sansa *cough*). Martin's greatest strength is his ability to show both sides of every conflict in a sympathetic light. Day exhibits this ability as well, with legitimate heroes representing differing opinions on religion, morality, national identity, and so on. He writes persuasively and genuinely from all of these perspectives, which is enormously refreshing, especially as he avoids appearing to simply hate humanity in the process.Which brings me to the worst thing about this book: the sequel isn't out yet! Still, I highly recommend picking it up. You'll have to be tolerant of a few minor quality control issues that are typical with indy publishing- more frequent typos, the occasional ungrammatical sentence, repetitious language now and again. Day has his moments as a wordsmith but in general the language in AToB falls in the good-not-great category for me, as someone who sticks pretty exclusively to the masters of fiction. That probably puts him in the top 1% of authors published in the last ten years, I would think.Bottom line: read it!See all 222 customer reviews...
