Actual sex happens twice and then it's briefly mentioned in single paragraphs with zero description of the act itself. This is a regency crime/mystery and prostitutes are characters in it. Naturally, there are a handful of swear words and mild randy talk. I don't think it's fair to give the idea this story is full of descriptive sex when that isn't the case at all.Now, on to my review. If you don't like stories written in first person, the steer clear. Not only is it written in first person, but it's written from the POV of a man, our Captain Lacey. Somehow, I thought there'd be some romance in here, but there wasn't. It's about the struggles of an ex-military man, who is poor, suffers lameness, depression and bouts of anger. Yet he holds onto his shaky honor. Getting to the "who done it" gets really convoluted. Lots of characters are introduced and sometimes the thread of his thoughts don't make the least bit of sense. Nevertheless, this is the first of the series and the Captain is likely to grow. If he doesn't then I won't continue with the series. DurrenI picked this up on a whim because of its (currently) low price on Kindle, and I'm glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Captain Lacey and some of the other characters in this series. There were a few small editing errors, as seems to be typical of some of the bargain ebooks, but nothing so distracting as to ruin my enjoyment of the story.The mystery itself is interesting, and I didn't figure it out ahead of time; however, I admit I wasn't trying very hard because I just wanted to enjoy the story. There's also the sort of sub-mystery about the characters themselves: What happened between Lacey and Colonel Brandon The pacing is great; I always felt like I was on the edge of my seat. And I wanted to know more about the people in the story. Fortunately, the author does a great job of letting us get to know Captain Lacey, Grenville, Marianne and the Brandons.At the end, I wanted to read more. Luckily, there are several other books in the series, and all are being made available as ebooks. I actually liked the basic mystery, but I did have a few big issues with the book that kept me from loving it. First off, I thought it was really annoying how they kept referencing his past with Brandon and how things had gone wrong, but took forever to explain it. Sometimes a backstory is a good subplot, but I wish the story could have come out way earlier in the novel. I also was disappointed with some of the characters.I thought Nance was initially a fun character with a sad backstory, and I didn't like the way her storyline developed. The other big character issue I had was Captain Lacey and Louisa's relationship. I could never figure out if the reader was supposed to see a romance, or if it was supposed to be more of a sibling-like relationship. I prefer the later interpretation, so I hope that is where the books lead.I definitely enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half, but I enjoyed it enough that I'll give book 2 a shot.See all 663 customer reviews...
