His fictionalized protagonist Mark sets off on a series of encounters with museum directors, Aboriginal leaders, art dealers, tour guides, anthropologists, and wanderers. Each promising lead fizzles suddenly, then segues into a new challenge, another possible resource. With each new turn the mystery deepens, at times taking on the semblance of a treasure hunt, and at times a "wild goose chase." Fascinating clips on the history and culture of Australia's Center are skillfully pieced together, and many ghosts are raised, reminders and revelations of the vast crimes of colonialism. Overlaid on the central theme of returning the object are views of Aboriginal culture told as verbal gems: a description of a sacred Mandala ceremony, a long walk with a Marsupial Mole Man, a visit to a grim Aboriginal settlement, the brilliant work of the ethnologist Theodore Strehlow, and Dreamtime stories of the Rainbow Serpent. What is this sacred object, the author wonders, this tjurunga stone Is it the immortal body of a totemic ancestor, a relic of ritualized manhood, a diagram of cosmic order, a deed for a section of land, or a portal between death rebirth Sacred Errand is highly enjoyable and informative, a tour de force for the first-time author. Whether you take it as an adventure story, a mystery, a travel diary or a philosophical quest in the desert, you will find this slender book a rewarding read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.A great readBy PaisleyA great read for anyone heading to Australia and is interested in the Aboriginal culture. The unique Aboriginal worldview evolved in a harsh environment utterly isolated from the western world. Sacred Errand is told in contemporary times with a view backward over the last hundred years of British colonial rule. And it looks forward: the narrator pursues his mission of returning a sacred Aboriginal relic even as he negotiates the shadowy, lingering effects of English occupation. Harkey tells his very readable story with sensitivity and humor from both sides of the cultural chasm. I now have a better understanding of what such different perspectives means and it’s value to us all.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Compelling MissionBy sgvaughanI thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a compelling story, well told. It progresses in a dream-like manner: the narrator moving forward on his mission, only to be shunted off time and again. I loved the way the language varies to reflect the experience of the narrator and to delineate his character - poetic for wonderment, straightforward for journey details, wistful for memories. I especially appreciated his wry take on things, himself included - laugh out loud funny at times. And I loved the weaving of the immediate and the immortal. This book spoke to me. -Marilyn VaughanSee all 7 customer reviews... Did Macquarie University sabotage exile blackban strand ... NEWEST UPDATE 4: Both Salby and Macquarie Uni responded today.
