Great Story!By J Bryden LloydAs a science fiction geek, a fantasy novel is probably on the outer edge of my comfort zone, but the blurb caught my attention and so I threw caution to the wind and got the book. What I actually discovered quite surprised me.Not only was I reading a fantasy novel, but I was also being dragged into the depths of a romantic storyline - yeuch!However, I persevered, for no other reason than Stradling had produced a very intriguing and beautifully written work... and I was enjoying it!The characters are very `real' within their world, which is equally well devised and described in extensive and considered detail, and while I was being drawn in by the vivid detail and the characters, the romantic edge of the plot sort of snuck up on me. Don't get me wrong, this is not a mushy love story, anything but! What it is is an excellent melding of quest, action, adventure and the story of how a powerful warrior meets the next part of his rather complex destiny, during his mission to try and help save a powerful kingdom.Even the `enemy' is not an entirely evil race, and as this begins to reveal itself within the story, the questions will begin to raise themselves as to who's side you should really be on.At the back of the main plot, a sub-plot is cleverly brought to bear as the book comes to its cliff-hanging conclusion, and it is this, rather more foreboding sub-plot that has led me to the second book, which I hope to read in the near future.For now, however, I would be happy to recommend this excellent piece of writing, to any and all who enjoy this genre, whether as your preliminary interest or not. The Queen lies dying of a mysterious illness caused by a magical spell. Hidden since childhood, her daughter is summoned by the monarch. The Queen passes her authority to her daughter and gives her a talisman which must be reunited with a matching artifact in order to re-join the immortal souls of her ancestors, thus breaking the spell. The daughter, her friend, a prince, and a revealer set off on their mission. A vicious horde of demon-like beings are determined to prevent their success.Ella Stradling has created a fantasy world filled with dark magic and sinister beings. Her story is well-written and very entertaining. Her characters are believable and the dialog flows perfectly. She has a great talent for descriptive phrases and easily sets the scenes for the reader. I can definitely recommend this book, and look forward to the second half!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Excellent High FantasyBy Linell JeppsenRevealing Rexa is right up there with some of the best high fantasy I've ever read, and that includes Tolkien and R.Jordan. It is beautifully edited and flows as smooth as silk. I think the thing that really made me sit up a take notice was the Kalkar, a race of fire creatures who are finely etched and quite frightening...although deadly, they have the hearts and souls of sorrow.This is a world under the influenece of an evil enchantement. Revealers, Evelar and his wife Miyam must go an a deadly quest to first- reunite a boy and a girl and second, find a magical talisman that binds the royal family and brings them back into power, before the whole world goes to war.It is no wonder that this book was honored by the ABNA. It was beautifully written with an eye to detail, excellent world building and perfect pacing. Bravo!See all 4 customer reviews...
