Whether you are a new career changer with no medical background, like myself, or just starting your career, this book is money well spen!, I am almost finished with my Medical Coding class and plan to take the CCS exam in March/ April 2014. The class was tough work at first because I did not have a medical background BUT if I can do it with my 50 year old brain SO CAN YOU! Here is a little advice:1) Buy the PROFESSIONAL editions of CPT and ICD-9-CM books. The color coded sections of the professional editions, versus the black and white lettering in the standard editions, will be a night and day difference in helping you differentiate listings and find codes faster. Also, the color illustrations help in visualizing some of the procedures. The really bad down side is that the ICD-9 professional book is printed on really thin paper so careful turning the pages. (I purchased the standard version and sent it back after comparing it with the professional edition).2) Order the Professional Review Guide for the CCS Examination 2013 Edition today!!! The book provides a well-rounded exam review covering CPT and ICD-9 procedures; and has test questions for Coding Review, Health Data Content an Standards, Medical Science, Medical Billing and Reimbursement Systems and Medical Case Study. In addition, the book provides ANSWERS for each section so you can check your knowledge. Also, there is an expanded explanation in the answer key area for several questions. An access code insert is included that provides FREE online access to Delmar Cengage Learning for the Professional Review Guide for the CCS Examination 2013. Note: You only have 365 to access the online learning so I recommend that you wait until after you finish your class, and finish reading the review book, before using the access code. That way you can maximize the amount of time you can access the site while you are studying for your exam. (A lot of the questions on the site are included in the book).3). Buy a good medical terminology book like Medical Terminology Systems, 6th Edition + Audio CD + TermPlus 3.0. This book is a great resource for learning medical terminology one body system at time. Also, the book includes two learning CD's. Try to learn as much from the medical terminology book as you can before you attend your first Medical Coding class to help you prepare. See if you can get an advance copy of the syllabus from the instructor. Listen to the audio version of CD # 1 for correct pronunciation of medical terms and use the test questions on CD # to test our knowledge.4) You can save a few bucks by ordering used books BUT read the comments to make sure the book is in good condition. Also, you can download any free apps you can find for Ipad, Android, PC devices.5) Become a member of the AHIMA site as a student member @ the $35 level and save $100 off your exam registration.This is a much longer review than I planned but I wish I had all of this info in one spot when I first started researching Medical Coding. I hope it is helpful!5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Frustrated with errors in book.By Jerusha WestonWhile the book has led me through many areas that I needed to review, I kept finding errors. Granted some of the "errors" I found were cleared up by going through coding clinics - but, others I can find no source or reasoning for. I wish there was some source on line for updates or corrections. For example, Case Study 1 has the primary dx as neutropenic sepsis secondary to chemotherapy. The answer key has the 1st code as 038.9 (infectious, other bacterial, unspecified septicemia) with 995.93 (non-infectious sepsis). The code 1st underlying condition is supposed to be a noninfectious code. Per CC 2008, 4Q, Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting: "The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) can develop as a result of certain non-infectious disease processes, such as trauma, malignant neoplasm, or pancreatitis. When SIRS is documented with a noninfectious condition, and no subsequent infection is documented, the code for the underlying condition, such as an injury, should be assigned, followed by code 995.93, Systemic inflammatory response syndrome due to noninfectious process without acute organ dysfunction..." There are several other problems - but there's not enough room to write them here. In the end, I've had to do a lot of research on many questions because I can't trust the answer key's in this book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Great ResourceBy Curious Lil CatFor those going through the physical and mental torture of studying for the AHIMA CCS exam, I'd recommend this guide. It has a lot of scenarios and plenty of exercises for each type of patient scenario. I find it particularly helpful for those of you who are in school, just finished school or are currently a coder but have yet to move up to more complex levels of coding. There are a lot of guides out there and this is one of the best. It has a ton of resources and will set you up for success. I purchased the RHIT Professional Review Guide from the same company (it was part of the list of required books during my last semester in the Health Information Management A.S. program) and passed on my first go. I have yet to take my CCS (thanks to a medical emergency and the testing freeze that took place in late March 2014), but I will resume studying with this as a primary resource. Review the coding guidelines, go through the whole book, and revisit any areas that you didn't do at least 80% or better on. That way you can spend your time focusing on your weaker areas (Medical Terminology, Anatomy Physiology, Medications, Disease Process, etc.). No book will ever give you questions and scenarios straight from the test, but this book will review general areas and scenarios that may be on the test that way you can work your way through them instead of freaking out.See all 27 customer reviews...
