So far, I liked this least of the four. But, as I always remind myself: just because I didn’t like it, that doesn’t mean it’s not good. I realize that much of what didn’t grab me about this book – in some ways about the series – is closely tied to who I am as a gay man.The only comparison I can really make with this series is to Joseph Hansen’s Dave Brandstetter novels (of which I read all twelve) written in the 1970s and 80s, when I was a young gay man. Although I’d say that Dorien Grey (the late Roger Margason) is a good writer, he’s not as refined and elegant as Hansen is. More importantly, however, is my inability to really relate to his characters. Dick Hardesty (who is somewhere around 30, therefore a bit older than I was at the time in which the books are set) is just not a very interesting character. Brandstetter, who was in his late 40s as I recall, was a complex man, comfortable with being gay, but a whole generation older than Hardesty (Dorien Grey’s age, in fact). There were layers to this man, and in his relationship with the world. Dick Hardesty seems like a good guy, but I never quite lock onto his character as someone with depth and a powerful moral compass. One particular example that irked me is the fact that Hardesty, a good post-Stonewall gay man, resents the fact that the homophobic police assume that all gay men are promiscuous. Sort of hypocritical to complain about that when Hardesty seems to have sex with nearly every male character he meets in the course of the book (and this was true in the last book, too). The fact that the book focuses on two main themes--bisexuality and male prostitution—without really digging into either topic very profoundly, left me feeling flat.I suspect for someone without my particular sensibilities would have fun reading this series, and I commend it to them. However, for this 60-something gay man, Dick Hardesty’s world doesn’t seem quite real enough to grab onto.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A Good Mystery with Plenty of Twists ! XDBy Yukako MullerHaving read the first three volumes of the Dick Hardesty Mystery Series, I have come to realise what exactly makes me SO crazy about the series:1) Incredibly hilarious monologues of Dick Hardesty.2) Right amount of lovey-dovey stuff and well-written but not-too-graphic sex scenes sprinkled ( sprayed ) here and there. Yes...I mean..."here and there".3) Not overly fast-paced though well-plotted, and certainly "not boring".4) The author's amazing way of going into quite a lot of detail without getting readers bored...but with so much humour and so many of Dick's monologues added to it.5) Everyday-life scenes of Dick and...sometimes others...which I believe are very important to get readers more familiar with the characters. ( And maybe...readers must know that sometimes more than just few pages are needed for these kinds of scenes. )So, finally...my book-review of the 4th volume of the Dick Hardesty Mystery Series. As some other reviewers have pointed out, this is the longest story of the series so far which gives us a great chance to find out more and more about each character and how they feel about each other. In this story, Dick Hardesty, a gay private investigator, is asked to solve a murder case by the owners of a gay/bisexual escort agency when one of their clients is found murdered at the luxurious hotel. Then, as the investigation goes on while interviewing more and more beautiful models from the agency, he gets more and more deeply involved in this case. And of course...in this volume, we get to see all these familiar characters from the previous three volumes:Phil: A handsome guy who's become good ( s*x ) friends with Dick.Tim: Dick's friend whose occupation is a morgue worker. Also, he is Dick's secret informant ( and his casual s*x friend ). He's really nice and cute on the inside and outside ! :)Jared: A good-looking, tall guy who is really...well, "big". He hates all the wrongs and those who bully weaker people. He is also physically strong and, of course, is not afraid of bullies or anyone who gets in the way ! ( I can see he seems to have a bit of an anger management problem though... )Jimmy: A bartender at Ramon's where the owner is Bob, a dear friend of Dick's.Glen O'Banyon: Dick's lawyer. His reputation is SO high and outstanding that there aren't any people who care about his sexual preference. There are two major characters from the Police Department, too:( They made their first appearance in #3 The Bar Watcher. )Captain Offermann: He is in charge of a homicide section. Dick has had talks with him more than just few times though he still does not know what to make of him. He is so mysterious - even to me... +_+The funny thing is...his appearance always makes Dick think of a Nazi officer or something, and he mentions that ( silently in his head ) every time he sees the Captain. His sexual preference is still unknown...well, I think.Lieutenant Richman: He happens to be the first official person from the Police Department who has approached Dick for information, opinions, and...some help. Now, I can really say aloud that I am SO glad to have read The Hired Man, because...I got to know more about this Lieutenant - his character, personality, and his delicate position between Dick and the Police Dept.
