They just keep getting better and better. Although the books are somewhat formulaic - all instrumentalize the romantic sub-plot device of a tortured soul falling irrevocably in love with a pure(er) spirit while facing unbelievable dangers with bravado - they maintain a fast, plot driven pace and are hard to put down. (If you are a night reader get ready to lose some sleep!). And the formula works; not only are the superheroes shown with human fallibilites and weaknesses, the sub-plots provide a satisfying counter weight to the often gritty primary narrative. These suspenseful escapist novels have it all, lots of local color, master criminals, world-wide conspiracies, mad scientists, and protagonists you can't help but root for. Each book could be read on its own, but I recommend you read them in sequence. Protagonists whom the reader has come to care about from previous books are worked into the subsequent stories and provide additional arcs of suspense. -- I can't wait for the seventh and final sequel to come out!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.A Solid Read for Action JunkiesBy Robin L. McLaughlinThis is the first book in the Elite Operatives series and was recommended to me by another reader on the Kindle forum a while back. The Elite Operatives are people raised from very young ages by a secret organization to undertake various missions, supposedly to make the world a better place. These missions frequently include assassination. These kinds of books in general, and this one especially, requires a healthy ability to suspend disbelief. I'm more than willing if the author (or in this case, authors) are able to make the rest work in a believable manner. In this I think they succeeded for the most part.I can't say the ideas are terribly original. There are flavors of Alias and Dollhouse here, among other things. Though the book was published a year before Dollhouse first aired. So the key is taking unoriginal elements and creating an entertaining story with engaging characters, which they did.The novel has many POV characters, so the reader knows all sorts of things that the individual characters do not. The suspense comes from wondering who will uncover what info and when, and who is going to get away with what. And I really enjoyed that aspect of the book. It was nicely paced, with plenty of intrigue and suspense to keep me racing through to find out what happens. The writing did have one significant flaw, the dialogue was often rather atrocious, especially between the two female lead characters. It sort of read like a thirteen-year-old's fantasy of what perfect lovey dovey talk sounds like. In other words, cliched, and not at all like naturally flowing conversation.Despite that, and a few other niggling things here and there, the book was a solid, entertaining read. The attraction between the women was believable, and the plot was nicely layered with several different players moving the action forward.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.A good start to an excellent series.By ErinKaneThe seeds were planted here for what has become one of my all time favorite lesbian romance/thriller series. That this is the weakest of them doesn't mean it's bad and it definitely is important for introducing characters that will return throughout the series. My biggest problem with this book is that Domino is my least favorite of the operatives. She's too damaged and lacks a sense of self for much of the book. She gets better, but she was never incredibly interesting to me especially when compared to Allegro, Lynx and Fetch. Haley on the other hand was a great character who I rooted for all the way.So minor issues aside, this is still a good book with thrills, steamy romance and introduces you to the world of the series. Definitely recommend.See all 26 customer reviews...
