Few in the gangland culture are aware that among them is an operator who has an extra edge, a man who has survived a few killings himself, only to drag his dead body back into the world of the living. Jack Fleming, savvy vampire and shrewd businessman, shows just how difficult it is to stay ahead of his enemies, even when he can vanish into thin air, or in cases of extreme need, sink his fangs into them. Hard as nails and hard to kill, the boys and the bosses both learn the hard way that Fleming can dish out some real punishment if they let their guard down; but then, who's looking out for a vampire to edge in on their actionMoody, well written and entirely enjoyable, the Vampire Files is just like 1920's Chicago; beautiful on the surface, with a grim undercurrent of crime running beneath. In Vol. Five, Jack has just endured a brutal torturing by one of his enemies, and being a vampire did not spare him any of the pain or horror. As such, he suffers from PTSD, that haunts him and causes his vampire nature to run wildly out of control at times, making him a danger even to the woman he loves. On top of all that, a new crime boss is in town, and at the same time, a string of murders begin. Jack has his hands full keeping himself under control, let alone getting a handle on who is leaving dead bodies at his nightclub!Vampire Files are vampires done right; as creatures who live on the edge of life and death, never wholly in either state, forced by what they are to take blood from the living to survive, and yet denied the humanity they can experience so close at hand. I simply cannot stand it when vampires are written as watered-down so that all the old restrictions are tossed casually aside. Some, okay, but a recent set of movies in the teen genre showed how vampires can be done oh so wrong! Give me the internal struggles, the blood, the horror, the cruelty of fate, and all the things a gritty, hard-bitten vampire has to bring to the table. The main character is an interesting character with his own flaws and a believable personality, the story is engrossing and the supporting characters add flavor to the story. I love P.N. Elrod and the Vampire Files series of books, however I would recommend the physical book over the kindle edition since whoever is in charge of proofing the converted versions failed miserably and there are so many errors in the kindle version where the scanning process didn't correctly read the pages and whoever is supposed to check for that apparently either doesn't exist or just doesn't do their job. 100% you should buy these books because they are great, just don't buy the kindle edition until someone fixes the MANY MANY MANY errors in the kindle versions.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.The perfect travel companion!By Deborah Mcalister HollandI bought this one just before leaving for New Zealand, and it's the perfect companion for a 14-hour plane flight. The stories are different enough to keep me interested, and the world that Elrod has created in Depression-era Chicago is cohesive enough to leave me feeling as if I've taken a short trip into the past when I'm done. This is a writer who makes me believe in "ethical" vampires, mobsters who fall in love, and torch singers who hope for immortality with their chosen vampire.
